Longtime GOP Senator Gene Ward Dies at 82, Leaving Behind a Legacy of Principle and Resilience

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hawaii has lost one of its longest-serving and most impactful Republican figures. According to his family, Representative Gene Ward passed away early on April 4th. Throughout 27 years, Ward served as the advocate for Hawaii Kai at the State Capitol.

Today, Ward was warmly commemorated on the House floor for his dedication to public service and his reputation as a vocal champion for his constituency.

A proposed excessive speeding law mandates imprisonment and potential confiscation of vehicles for individuals who repeatedly violate speed limits.

As a member of the Republican Party, Ward developed his distinctive political approach, advocating for his constituents and boldly expressing his opinions when necessary.

"He represented what it means to be part of the opposition. He would always stand his ground when confronted with a challenge. Even if he stood alone, he remained steadfast in his beliefs," stated Minority Floor Leader Diamond Garcia.

Ward dedicated his life to serving others through various roles: he fought in the Vietnam War, volunteered with the Peace Corps, worked for USAID during the Bush administration, and spent more than 20 years in the state House.

The governor directed that the flags be flown at half-mast in his tribute, referring to him as a "combatant in all respects" and a "committed leader." Many people are employing the term "fearless" when speaking about Ward.

"I would describe him as fearless when it came to expressing his views on representing his community. It’s with great sadness that I share this," stated Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi.

His departure forces the Hawaii Republican Party to assemble a roster of candidates to take over for him. Although his position will be occupied, it might prove challenging to find someone who can match his legacy.

“When I received the news at an event, the sheer volume of texts and calls highlighted the number of people he impacted. Thus, the legislature will certainly feel different without Representative Gene Ward,” stated House Minority Leader Rep. Lauren Matsumoto.
