Kenneth Lonergan shared with a gathering of aspiring writers at Dublin’s Storyhouse film scripting event, "I’ve earned my keep by rewriting content for others and penning scripts they needed, yet I have only directed three movies of my own, each time ensuring I had as much artistic freedom as could be granted."

For myself, I needed guardians with greater strength than mine. However, once I located them, acquired their services, and ensured they would safeguard me, still only two out of every three attempts succeeded—my second movie saw considerable challenges as I endeavored to maintain creative control. Yet, without certain protections within contracts, filmmakers may alter scripts and replace actors against your wishes.
When asked about the present condition of the film industry, Lonergan expressed his longing for the daring filmmaking from the 1970s. He stated, "I grew up watching excellent films, but unfortunately, this has not been the experience for most cinema-goers since then."
The overall quality surpassed anything seen since then. Back in those days, there was less emphasis on highlighting every theme and ensuring everything carried significant weight. The practice of conveying the moral of the story within the first ten minutes and clearly positioning oneself on political and social spectrums for the audience wasn’t as prevalent.
He went on: “I believe talent remains constant among individuals, yet the spirit of the times, how Hollywood believes profitability can be achieved, has shifted dramatically and hasn’t reverted. Every development post this shift seems to oppose rather than align with prevailing trends in produced content. It’s not like filmmakers today are deliberately crafting nostalgic, quasi-deep message-driven films due to external pressures—they’re almost preemptively doing so. They seem to be staying ahead of the curve without needing to.”
Lonergan emphasized that uniqueness is crucial, and a writer's distinctive voice is "the most fascinating aspect you can provide."
Your role is to safeguard and maintain that while respecting your autonomy and personal uniqueness, without being swayed by adopting clichés.

However, during filming, he had an intuitive sense that starting with this sequence could be effective.
The particular scene you're referring to stemmed from the opening credits and the initial credit sequence along with some spontaneous dialogue delivered by Casey Affleck right at the start of the movie. Casey has great skills as an improviser, so I simply requested him to begin conjuring things up spontaneously.
He went on: “When your intuition feels strong, it’s wise to rely on it and acknowledge its value. Personally, the approach I’ve found useful is recognizing when circumstances begin working in my favor like a tailwind; at such times, instead of questioning it, I simply ride it out until things change direction.”
Lonergan, who is also a noted dramatist, informed the crowd that he is presently juggling multiple projects simultaneously.
They keep bumping into each other, and this has become the most efficient method of postponement I have ever come up with," he joked. "While I prefer not to discuss it extensively, I am currently juggling two screenplays and a TV project, and I haven’t decided which one will take precedence yet.
