Earlier this week, we discussed with PA CareerLink about a local mining firm —Corsa Coal— which declared bankruptcy and resulted in approximately 300 workers being let go.
Officials from CareerLink stated that they could not provide specific comments regarding Corsa Coal but mentioned that they welcomed the dismissed workers to participate in a job fair.

Last Thursday, we went to the job fair held at Saint Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Somerset. We talked with representatives from PA CareerLink and the PA Department of Labor and Industry to gather information about the support services available for those who have been let go from their jobs.
The administrator of PA CareerLink states that the event provides an excellent opportunity for direct interaction with employers in person, as opposed to online interactions. They also mention that this marks their first job fair in Somerset County since 2017.
We likewise inquired about the number of Corsa Coal employees who participated in the job fair on Thursday.
"I can’t provide an exact figure for that, but there were certainly several involved. Once we finalize our counts, we’ll have a clearer picture, and I’m quite pleased to see that they made it," stated site administrator Heather Sally.
Sally mentions that it was regrettable what occurred with the Corsa employees, yet she believes it was fortunatetiming that they could organize the job fair as an additional support.
During our conversation with the PA Department of Labor and Industry, they elaborated on the role of a rapid response team in aiding these workers.
"Quick-response info sessions are scheduled for next Tuesday regarding your query. During these meetings, details concerning unemployment benefits will be provided. It’s an unsettling period for those who've never faced joblessness before; various situations could arise, and since specifics about this company aren’t clear, there might be severance packages distributed over a set duration. Consequently, representatives from the unemployment office will attend to address any concerns," explained Crystal Houser, Director of Bureau of Workforce, Partnership and Operations.
The Department of Labor and Industry mentions that they collaborate closely with CareerLink and their rapid response team members.
Houser emphasizes that although losing a job can be extremely frightening, it is highly fulfilling to have a group of professionals adept at guiding individuals through such challenges.
