FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE )— Fresno State students had a glimpse into the professional world on Thursday.
The university organized TASTE 2025—a mentoring event designed to link students with experts from various industries. TASTE signifies "Take a Student to Lunch," and this initiative particularly targets individuals studying communications disciplines.
This year, eighty-one mentors were matched with eighty-one students to offer them professional guidance and motivation.
Fresno State sophomore Isabella Cawley reached out to Central Unified School District public information officer Jonathan Burrows.
Members of KSEE24/CBS47 had the opportunity to mentor several students as well.
Burrows states that the aim is to provide them with "the chance to engage with us, help establish that connection, and inform them about our work, simply to offer another perspective on those involved in communications in the Central Valley."
The event wasn't just for the students' advantage.
AI Strategist Tori Terhune delivered a presentation on leveraging AI in the professional sphere. She mentioned that it can aid in composing clearer emails, conducting deeper research, and accelerating routine activities.
Yet, she mentions that you will reap from artificial intelligence only as much as you invest in it.
"The more you regard AI as human-like, the more human-like reactions you will receive," Terhune stated.
She believes that individuals shouldn't view software such as ChatGPT as the ultimate source of information. Rather, she suggests that people should regard AI tools similarly to how they might consider a squirrel—as helpful but not entirely reliable.
“Many individuals are genuinely terrified that artificial intelligence will swoop in and either replace their jobs or render them obsolete. However, I strongly urge people to consider AI merely as a tool,” Terhune stated.
She claims that nothing surpasses human capability, yet she believes that human prowess will continue to grow by utilizing AI.
"I believe she's correct. This technology isn't something that will disappear. Hence, it would be advantageous for us to understand it and adapt it so we can utilize it more effectively," Cawley stated.
