Representative Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), a centrist Democrat from a border constituency, took issue with members of his party for heavily concentrating on the situation surrounding Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident wrongly sent back to El Salvador recently.

During an interview on Wednesday for NewsNation’s “On Balance with Leland Vittert,” Cuellar addressed the "concerns about due process" regarding Abrego Garcia’s situation but mentioned that his constituents are urging Democrats to prioritize other significant matters.

Cuellar acknowledged that some Democrats have started discussing border security more frequently, yet he implied it seemed incongruous for them to subsequently advocate for Aguirre García’s return to the United States.

"We've discussed robust border security for numerous years, and now we see Democrats also addressing the issue of the border," Cuellar stated.

But, let me show proper respect," he went on, "when discussing the involvement of someone — and I acknowledge there were concerns over legal procedures — this occurred in Maryland and now extends to El Salvador. I am not sure if this is the appropriate matter for Democrats to concentrate on at present.

He stated that Democrats ought to concentrate on "robust border protection," along with "the expenses associated with daily life, how tariffs impact consumers, and the changes in the stock market."

Those are the topics that constituents in my district like to discuss," Cuellar stated, noting that during his visits across the district, "It's uncommon for someone to bring up the case of that individual from Maryland, as they prefer talking about different issues.

The interview has come as A division has emerged within the party. Regarding the management of the case, as certain Democrats start questioning if this volatile topic is an effective approach with Republicans counter-attacking.

On Monday, four progressive representatives from the House traveled to El Salvador with the aim of advocating for Abrego Garcia’s return to the U.S., following Senator Chris Van Hollen’s visit the previous week. They have characterized their efforts as a response against an encroachment on fundamental constitutional liberties.

"This is all about adhering to due process; it's about making sure we comply with the laws of our nation," Representative Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) stated on Tuesday following his return from El Salvador.

Cuellar discussed the journey during the interview on Wednesday.

"I understand some of my peers... they headed down there, you know, attempting to retrieve the individual. Should that really be our focus?" asked Cuellar.
