The lead actress from "Agent Carter" mentioned that Cruise cautioned her to disregard the rumors suggesting they were involved romantically.
"When I discussed this with him, he would say, ‘You clearly understand who you are. You know your core values. That’s all that truly counts. What others think of you isn’t important as long as you remain true to yourself and are aware of your own moral principles,’" Atwell remembered.
She and the 62-year-old ignited romance speculation in late 2020 when a source informed The Sun They "got along famously from the start" during the filming of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.
They stayed silent amidst the speculations, yet reignited the rumors when they showed up at the Wimbledon finals together the next July.
Conversation resumed among people once they announced the promotion of Mission:Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two.

Two months earlier, Atwell became engaged during an April trip to Venice, whereas Cruise was generating speculation about his relationship with Shakira.
Still, Atwell has sung the praises of Cruise in past interviews, telling The Guardian earlier this year stating that he is "quite courteous and highly professional."
“When I began, I noticed the distinctive atmosphere surrounding him and realized there’s nobody quite like him,” Atwell stated. “And there won’t ever be another because actors aren’t produced this way anymore… He stands as his own production company.”
As a result, I felt encouraged to explore various options. There was always an assurance of safety and no fear of failing. Tom truly enjoys seeing everyone flourish on set.
Although they haven't been in a relationship, Cruise bestowed something invaluable upon his costar.
Atwell gave credit to Cruise for assisting her in overcoming social anxiety in Hollywood (according to Variety while appearing on a recent episode of the Reign With Josh Smith podcast.
Atwell mentioned to Smith that social anxiety is quite prevalent these days and many individuals experience it at some point,
It shows up differently for everyone, however, his motivational speech really aids with this issue. When you enter a space and sense those anxious feelings creeping in, causing you to want to withdraw within yourself, you tend to overanalyze and question things like whether you appear odd or clumsy. This tendency leads us inward, yet Tom advised taking the contrary approach instead.
Cruise said to Atwell, "Look around carefully, scan the space, and think... What am I searching for? Which object is tied to my insecurities? Could it be someone here who brings back memories of my childhood tormentor?"
The individual standing there previously did not offer me employment? The one who I believe treated me unfairly at some point?
Atwell went on: "When I focus on it for an extended period, the anxiety gains a name. It gets labeled, or else I might think, 'Actually, you’re feeling very envious,' or 'I’m truly experiencing loneliness,' or 'I feel daunted by that person’s skills or self-assurance.'"
Once I identify exactly what it is, this overall feeling of unease dissipates, which gives me a chance to address it effectively. He simply said: ‘When you're afraid of something, continue facing it head-on. Don’t look away or shut your eyes; instead, maintain eye contact with whatever scares you because it usually provides clues on how to tackle and conquer it.’
One can confidently state that Atwell and Cruise will maintain a strong friendship, despite their highly praised on-screen chemistry not translating into an actual romantic relationship off-screen.
