What is the number of empty plots in your area? It might be higher than you think. Numerous plots stay unoccupied because they haven’t attracted tenants or are waiting for new construction agreements. This results in countless unused spaces being present in each town that could serve a much greater purpose—like acting as a tiny-home village for unhoused folks.
In 2021, Hope the Mission converted an unused parking area into a community of small homes, as reported. Good Good Good It served as the model for the subsequent six communities that launched in the Los Angeles region.
The initial project named Chandler Tiny Home Village provides 40 studio or single-bedroom accommodations with a total of 75 sleeping spaces. These compact dwellings span 64 square feet each and come equipped with amenities such as heating, cooling systems, windows, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide sensors, workstations, and individual exterior doors that can be locked for privacy.
As stated by Good Good Good, Kadre Architects, who were responsible for the uniquely shaped construction, mentioned, “In such projects, good design is crucial as it not only elevates the residents but also respects and improves the surrounding area, fostering a sense of pride within the local community.”
The statement further elaborated that the design stood out for its "spatial quality, vibrant elements, and functional effectiveness," establishing a "community area exemplar marked by a high degree of aesthetic sensibility and attractiveness rarely encountered in similar initiatives."
For eligibility in this community, individuals must lack stable housing and reside within a three-mile area around the village. Residents aren’t required to pay rent; however, they should aim towards securing long-term homes throughout their three-month residency. Services provided include meal provisions, mental health services, employment aid, case management, along with various additional advantages.

"I support a housing-first approach, where our aim is to relocate everyone into homes and apartments, providing them with permanent residences," explained Ken Craft, CEO of Hope the Mission, in his statement. LAist When the village was established in 2021, someone said, “If we just sit around waiting for affordable housing projects to complete, the homelessness crisis will continue expanding. It’s crucial that we move individuals from the streets to temporary shelters as we work towards developing long-term solutions like affordable and permanent homes.”
By early 2025, the Hope Mission had established 11 villages comprising 6,700 housing units.
Small houses serve as both an effective and gentle approach to shift towards more sustainable living. unhoused community returning to permanent housing; these are also available as alternatives for others. The more compact the living space, the lesser the energy consumption, resulting in reduced costs for utilities such as energy, water, and taxes.
Tiny homes requires minimal effort and cost to construct and frequently utilizes more environmentally friendly materials. By ceasing the development of extravagant apartments and avoiding oversized living spaces, we can significantly decrease energy consumption within our communities.
