'Grenade of uncertainty': Raygun owner fears impact of new Trump tariffs

Kamis, 03 April 2025, April 03, 2025

A small business owner from Des Moines likened the recent Trump tariffs to "a grenade of uncertainty exploding within the American economy."

Mike Draper, who owns a raygun shop, is concerned. He mentions that possibly having to increase prices because of the new tariffs could be detrimental to his business operations.

"We might sell around $2 million annually in unprinted T-shirts. Therefore, a 10% boost would equate to an additional $200,000 per year. To put this into perspective, Raygun isn’t exactly a highly lucrative business venture. Hence, such a sum represents a significant amount of money for us," explained Draper.

Draper sources a significant portion of his T-shirt stock from Central America. While the cotton might be sourced domestically within the U.S., the assembling process occurs in regions now subject to additional tariffs.

"What impact tariffs will have remains unknown. Is corporate greed behind this? Essentially, you’ve tossed a grenade filled with uncertainty right into the heart of the American economy. We’ll just have to wait and see how things unfold,” Draper commented.

Matthew Mitchell, an associate professor at the Drake University College of Business, stated, "In some respects, this is like a jolt to the system."

Mitchell pointed out that tariffs essentially act as a tax on businesses, often shifting this burden onto consumers.

"They generally do not result in significant economic benefits. They typically fail to create more jobs. Nevertheless, they remain quite appealing from a political standpoint," Mitchell stated.

The quick aftermath, marked by a crashing stock market, is frightening for those investing.

If you’re tuning into the news today, you might be feeling emotionally charged. There’s likely concern building up inside you. Our consistent recommendation has been to stay calm. Avoid making impulsive choices based on emotions. It’s important not to liquidate your 401(k) right now,” stated Mitchell.

The majority of stock currently available in stores won’t face tariff-induced price hikes at present; however, prices might increase shortly.
