Geri Jewell is most recognized for portraying Blair's relative Geri The Facts of Life And assisting individuals in understanding those who have cerebral palsy. Born prematurely due to her mother’s car accident during pregnancy, she received a diagnosis of cerebral palsy when she was one year and six months old. Despite this, she persevered and increased awareness for people with cerebral palsy through an '80s television show. Now aged 68, despite encountering numerous health challenges, she maintains a positive outlook by cultivating a healthy "sense of humor."
Jewell recently appeared on Steve Kmetko’s Still Here Hollywood podcast On Monday, March 24, she confessed, "This is tough because I'm dealing with new challenges due to aging. Walking has become more difficult than before. Although I've maintained a particular way of walking, my balance has significantly worsened. Moreover, my hearing loss has intensified, which frustrates me greatly." Besides managing the health problems associated with cerebral palsy, she also suffered a broken neck in 1999.
She went on, "Currently, 45% of my neck is made from titanium, which is quite robust. However, my cerebral palsy persists in trying to shift my head around uncontrollably, but my neck resists, saying, 'I'm not capable of doing that.' ” Maintaining her humorous outlook, she mentioned that due to persistent discomfort, she receives regular Botox injections in her neck and shoulders every few months. As a result, she joked that her neck resembles that of a young teenager.
Even though Jewel feels she has faced more difficulties than many others, she remains thankful for her experiences. She stated, "I feel incredibly fortunate. The various hurdles I've encountered—challenges everyone faces—are best navigated with a good dose of humor. If I didn't find moments to chuckle now and then, I'd probably end up in an asylum. Laughing is not just necessary; it's essential."
