HB 555 In the state legislature, there is a proposal to waive the $75 registration fee for medical marijuana cards for honorably discharged veterans.
In Florida, the medical marijuana program mandates that a patient—who has to be a resident—must obtain a diagnosis from a doctor, submit an application for an ID card, and pay the required registration fee.
The proposed legislation would mandate cardholders to refresh their registration biennially, extending the period from the former yearly necessity.
Renewals are also priced at $75, but this bill would exempt veterans from paying this charge.
Because marijuana is illegal on a federal level, medical marijuana is not covered by Medicare, and any doctor’s visits to obtain a qualifying diagnosis would be out of pocket.
In 2016, medical marijuana became legal in Florida.
The Health Professions & Programs Subcommittee has moved forward with the legislation but hasn’t brought it to the House floor yet. Should it be approved, the law would become active on July 1st.
