First Friday: Art Gallery Receptions Set to Sparkle

Kamis, 03 April 2025, April 03, 2025

On Thursday, curator Shelby Graham and artist Rinat Aldema Terre inaugurated "Divergent Visions," an exhibition featuring unconventional photographic techniques, at the m.k.contemporary art gallery located in downtown Santa Cruz. This showcase is organized in collaboration with The Center for Photographic Art in Carmel and Photo Carmel 2025.

The downtown exhibition highlights works by Graham, Terre, alongside Jody Alexander, Martha Casanave, Edgar Cruz, Genevieve Daly, Adrienne Defendi, Janet Fine, Laurie Gabriel, Angela Gleason, Greg Mettler, Beverly Rayner, and Brian Taylor. This display continues until April 27 and invites visitors to an inaugural First Friday reception on April 4 at 6 p.m.

In the meantime, the Community of Digital Artists (CODA), featuring photographers Mark Overgaard, Maria Susa, and Robert Mahrer, has mounted a display of their works at the R. Blitzer Gallery this week. This exhibition, curated by Center for Photographic Arts Executive Director Ann Jastrab, covers portions of the walls within the gallery located in the former Wrigley Gum factory area on Santa Cruz’s west side. On April 4th, as part of First Fridays, the Blitzer Gallery will hold a reception starting at 5 p.m., complete with live musical entertainment. Additionally, collaborating with Photo Carmel 2025, the gallery plans to feature an artists' talk led by distinguished photographer and local resident Oliver Klink on April 26th—the last day of the showcase.
