BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced an extensive tariff proposal affecting over 280 nations and regions. This move will impose reciprocal tariffs on more than 60 of these entities.

Trump has long stated that other countries have taken advantage of the United States in the trade market for decades. With these tariffs, his goal is to begin negotiations with these countries and create fair trade agreements. He also expects these tariffs will lead to more industries investing stateside.

The market response to the announcement was immediate, with many investor portfolios experiencing their most significant decline in several years.

However, simply because stock markets have declined does not imply that selling is necessary. Actually, specialists advise viewing this period as a chance for potential gains.

"Everyone tends to invest in the stock market when prices are soaring, and opts to exit when prices fall—precisely the wrong approach. Therefore, this situation offers you a chance if you've been looking for a good time to enter the market," explained David Wald from Lux Wealth Advisors.

Wald emphasized that the key point to keep in mind is diversification. It’s crucial always to distribute your investments across various options.

This guidance is particularly crucial for retirees or individuals approaching retirement.

"Given your age, investment horizon, and attitude towards risk, asset allocation remains crucial. So, how should you position yourself within the market?" Wald stated.

Eugene Graner from Heartland Investor Services Inc. thinks that the temporary discomfort will result in lasting benefits for the country.

"This will require some time, however, after about one-and-a-half to two-and-a-half years, it will result in well-paid job opportunities. This shift will move us away from just serving in the economic sectors towards manufacturing goods within our own nation," Graner stated.

The two nations not affected by the additional tariffs imposed on Wednesday were Canada and Mexico.

For those unsure of which direction to go, Wald suggested that the market will eventually correct itself. Thus, they should take a moment to relax and concentrate on their investment portfolio’s overall well-being over time.
