President Donald Trump's trade war represents an extension of his broader policy of American isolationism across various administrative initiatives, according to former Governor John Kasich (R-OH).
On Thursday, speaking with MSNBC, Kasich expressed hope that the Trump tariffs were merely part of a negotiation strategy.
He pointed out that they are moving towards isolationism, as Trump’s policies guarantee that the U.S. will no longer be engaged globally.

"We simply aim to halt all operations. As they say, with great power comes great responsibility, which we anticipate," Kasich remarked, referencing the proverb popularized by Spider-Man .
"We’re kind of stepping back from it," Kasich stated. “We did something similar following World War I, and as a result, we found ourselves drawn into World War II. While I’m not trying to exaggerate the situation, my point is that there’s currently an idea circulating that America should retreat. Yes, ‘woe is us’—we face so many challenges; everyone seems to be against us. Is that really true though? Look at how much our nation has prospered economically. Of course, I understand that some individuals are facing difficulties, but overall…”
He pointed out increased longevity and impressive technological advancements enhancing quality of life.
"What we’re pointing out is that things aren’t great right now. However, they aren’t terrible either; we shouldn’t see ourselves as victims,” he went on. “In fact, our nation isn’t doing too badly at all. But suggesting that we’ll engage in conflict with every global player and retreat inwardly—shutting the door and drawing the curtains to face challenges alone—isn’t the way forward.”
He wondered for how long that might be sustainable.
"There’s this entire notion that things need to be completely overhauled. The issues our nation faces stem from politicians who lack the ability to handle the budget effectively,” he exclaimed. “They struggle with controlling expenditures, plain and simple, and they seem unwilling to address it. Do I feel passionate about this? Definitely. In my view, it represents terrible policymaking. This approach has never proven successful, and I doubt it ever will.”
