CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) — The Iowa House Democrats mentioned they are currently searching for a new representative to take over the position previously held by former Iowa Representative Sami Scheetz.

Scheetz was elected twice to serve in the Iowa House of Representatives as a Democrat for House District 78, an area encompassing Cedar Rapids.

On Tuesday, a committee from Linn County designated him as a supervisor.

The law in Iowa mandates that the governor must convene a special election to fill their position when necessary.

Jennifer Konfrst, who leads the minority party in the Iowa House, mentioned they are awaiting confirmation from the governor’s office regarding the scheduling of elections.

She states that they believe firmly a Democrat will regain the position.

“Several individuals have expressed interest, and many more are coming forward wanting to participate as well. However, at this point, we haven’t decided whom we will ultimately choose,” stated Representative Konfrst.

Following Scheetz’s departure, Iowa House Republicans keep their 67-32 supermajority.
