EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) — On Wednesday morning, three individuals lost their lives, one of whom was a police officer, with at least two more injured after a chase involving an SUV believed to be linked to suspected human smuggling.
The chase concluded around 3 a.m. when a collision occurred, resulting in several vehicles being overturned or sideways along Juan Pablo II Boulevard near the Rio Grande in Juarez, Mexico.
The Chihuahua state police recognized one of their officers, Elida Elizabeth Sariñana, among the victims. According to a police report acquired by Border Report, the other two people who died were passengers in the brown SUV.
A member of the Mexican National Guard along with two citizens sustained injuries from the collision. According to the report, a state police cruiser crashed into an SUV at high velocity.
Later on Wednesday, a state police commander stated that only one civilian was injured, contrary to earlier reports. According to local news outlets, the officer who died had been thrown out of the car and hit the road surface following the collision.
The report describes the event as a "clash" involving alleged human traffickers, the state police, and the National Guard. In recent years, the region from the Ysleta-Zaragoza International Bridge to Ciudad Juarez’s Big Red X Plaza has become notorious as a location where people attempting to bypass the US border fence unlawfully would be left behind.
