Dan Osborn Eyes Potential Run for U.S. Senate in 2026

Dan Osborn, who has been an Independent for many years, is setting up an exploratory committee for yet another attempt at winning a seat in the U.S. Senate.

Osborn, who lost to Republican Deb Fischer in the November election , said in a statement Thursday that he would campaign against Republican Senator Pete Ricketts — assuming he decides to run.

"A couple of years back, I was just a little-known union mechanic working in Nebraska. However, I decided to run for the U.S. Senate position. To our surprise, we managed to secure 47 percent of the vote," Osborn stated. "Pete Ricketts, who has billions under his belt, currently serves as Nebraska’s other senator. His term will end soon. This gives us a chance to swap out a millionaire with someone from the ranks of laborers like me," he added.

Ricketts has been holding the position since 2023 after being appointed by Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen to take over the role. vacancy established by Ben Sasse Ricketts subsequently stepped down. He then went on to defeat the Democrat, Preston Love Jr., in the election. a special election scheduled for November 2024 .

Ricketts is anticipated to run for his initial full-term next year. His campaign highlighted Ricketts' service as Nebraska's governor and thus far as a U.S. Senator.

"Senator Ricketts garnered the highest number of votes ever recorded in state elections due to his demonstrated ability to serve Nebraskans effectively," according to a statement from Ricketts' campaign.

Osborn, who works as both a steamfitter and an industrial mechanic, played a crucial role in saving almost 500 positions within Nebraska. during the Kellogg's strike .
