CNN International host Richard Quest clashed with a network commentator Scott Jennings over President Donald Trump’s To emphasize his argument, Quest displayed his imported footwear.
Trump announced sweeping tariffs on imports from every country, with a baseline figure of 10%. However, he singled out dozens of countries whose goods will be tariffed at markedly higher rates. During the rollout, the president presented a table of countries and the tariff rates they allegedly impose on American-made goods. But it turns out the figures were made up using a bizarre calculation .
On Thursday, markets responded negatively, with all three main U.S. indices declining by four to six percent.
On Thursday’s CNN NewsNight Jennings stated that if the tariffs result in economic devastation, the blame would fall on Trump. This comment caused Quest, who was visiting as a guest, to object.
Quest stated, "While the political repercussions may fall on a single individual, the economic impacts will affect the entire globe," he explained. "This is essentially an unwise experiment... Furthermore, consider the Republicans who haven’t yet voiced their opinions. Sure, Mitch McConnell issued a statement. But where was he discussing this issue? After all, throughout the campaign, we were well aware that tariffs would be a major topic."
The comment led to the following conversation, during which Quest expressed his inner thoughts. Nikita Khrushchev :

QUESTION: Nobody anticipated this insanity.

Jennings: I reckon many working-class Americans would view what happened to them as economic devastation.
BUT THE JOBS THAT ARE LIKELY TO RETURN, as stated by the Peterson Institute, are precisely the ones President Donald Trump claims will return but which America does not require. Instead, what America urgently needs is well-paid positions with advanced skills tied to cutting-edge technologies like AI-driven economies for this new digital era. The kind of work he wants to resurrect involves outdated industries. To illustrate, consider my own footwear; it was manufactured in China. Even when discussing premium goods, check their origins—most shoes from such brands originate in countries like China or Vietnam. If we were to bring production back domestically, costs would rise significantly by approximately 34%. These items include regular shoes purchased at discounted prices.
