CNN International host Richard Quest clashed with a network commentator Scott Jennings over President Donald Trump’s To emphasize his argument, Quest displayed his imported footwear.
Trump announced sweeping tariffs on imports from every country, with a baseline figure of 10%. However, he singled out dozens of countries whose goods will be tariffed at markedly higher rates. During the rollout, the president presented a table of countries and the tariff rates they allegedly impose on American-made goods. But it turns out the figures were made up using a bizarre calculation .

On Thursday’s CNN NewsNight Jennings stated that if the tariffs result in economic devastation, the blame would fall on Trump. This comment led Quest, who was visiting as a guest, to object.
Quest stated, "While the political repercussions might fall solely on one individual, the economic ramifications will affect the entire globe," he noted. "This is essentially an experiment that shouldn’t have proceeded... Furthermore, you mention how some Republicans haven't spoken up yet. For instance, Mitch McConnell did release a statement. But where was his commentary on this issue during the election campaigns when tariffs were known to be a significant point?"

The type of work he wishes to revive pertains mainly to outdated sectors. To illustrate, consider my footwear; it was manufactured in China. Even when discussing premium goods, inspecting such items often reveals they were produced overseas—like my own shoes from China or Vietnam. If we bring manufacturing back domestically, costs could rise significantly—in some cases upping expenses by around 34%. For instance, think about an average pair of shoes purchased at a bargain retailer.
