RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Many of us have gone to the store lately and picked up a dozen eggs just to gasp in shock as we look at the prices.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, egg prices have more than tripled since 2019.
Ranging from slightly above $1.50 to nearly $6 per dozen, and considering the tariffs on imported items, prices could potentially increase further.
However, that's not the sole explanation for why individuals are introducing tiny, cuddly companions into their collections of pets.
"We also encounter many families who are keen on educating their children about caring for animals and understanding the origins of their food," explains Mindy Cannady, co-owner of Sierra Feed and Saddlery.
She mentions that looking after chickens can be an enjoyable activity, yet it also demands significant effort.
"Chickens are quite delicate during this stage. It’s crucial to keep them warm. At this point, you must ensure their protection. Make certain they stay clean and provide regular feeding for them. There should be ample water available as well. These elements are essential for ensuring their survival," according to Cannady.
Many individuals might be curious whether a rooster is necessary for hens to lay eggs, but it isn't. Simply allow the chickens some time to reach maturity, and you can expect fresh eggs each morning.
"Female chicks typically require four to six months to reach maturity before they start laying eggs," according to Cannady.
Plus, they can assist in keeping your yard free from slick or snaky creatures.
So, once they have access to free-range areas, they tend to tidy up your yard. They scratch around in the soil searching for insects. Since they enjoy eating bugs, they help keep your yard pest-free. Additionally, they can safeguard you from snakes.
