Adam Devine, the actor, has disclosed the specifics of a serious health diagnosis he received following years of enduring chronic pain.
The Modern Family actor has lived with painful consequences of an accident he had aged 11, when he was run over by a cement truck, and recently revealed his pain led to doctors sharing their grim prognosis.
Devine told the podcast Insights from Graham Bensiger In-Depth Interviews He endures muscle spasms throughout his body and feels pain when sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods.
The actor recounted a chilling discussion he had with his medical team: “They informed me that my time was up. Just over the past year, they let me know that I have this condition known as stiff-person syndrome. This illness causes your muscles to become extremely rigid, making it impossible for you to walk or even move. Eventually, since your heart is also a muscle and becomes too constricted to function, it stops beating, leading to death.”
As Devine's condition deteriorated, he sought out an expert whose viewpoint was distinct from the others.
“And he says, 'You don’t have it. You really don’t have it.’ He explains, ‘This originates from your childhood accident. The spasms are somewhat mysterious, but they might be happening because you became so tense that your body is confused about how to handle it. It’s possible you’re experiencing some erratic signals.'"
Devine, who was also featured in the movie Pitch Perfect and co-created comedy Workaholics Has since undergone stem cell therapy and says he feels better than he has in many years.
The actor had earlier disclosed information about his accident when, at the age of 11, he collided with the street while accompanying some friends on a candy-buying trip.
