The Brief
  • President Trump's 25% tariff on imported vehicles is already having impacts on auto plants.
  • Stellantis has announced that approximately 900 American workers will face temporary layoffs.
  • The executives from the car manufacturer mentioned that they factored in Trump's tariffs when making their decisions.

DETROIT (FOX 2) - President Donald Trump announced an executive order imposing reciprocal tariffs, particularly targeting the auto sector, with a 25% tax applied to all cars manufactured abroad and brought into the United States.

What they're saying

The market has started reacting to automobile tariffs, and automakers are feeling the impact as well. Stellantis recently announced layoffs of nearly 1,000 employees, including some based in Michigan. Both the corporation and industry analysts have shared their perspectives on this action.

In 2024, Stellantis reported a 70% decline in net profit, amounting to about $6 billion, with net revenues also down. High inventory combined with reduced shipment volumes and unfavorable sales. Now add tariffs. It’s a tough mix.

Certain employees think they aren’t concerned about this issue whatsoever. This comes from James Benson, an autoworker with the UAW who knows people working for Stellantis.

One of the slower participants was Stellantis," Benson stated. "Initially, they were reluctant to collaborate with the UAW. However, this wasn’t unexpected.

Dig deeper

The car company released an email sent to staff members, provided to FOX 2, stating that around 900 American workers would face temporary layoffs.

Stellantis has faced a declining stock value and underperforming sales. This issue now necessitates halting production at facilities in both Canada and Mexico. Additionally, this disruption will result in temporary furloughs for employees at the Warren and Sterling stamping plants located in Michigan.

"What needs to be done is getting their product lineup organized. They're currently addressing this issue. Additionally, they require more new models and improved pricing strategies overall," stated worker John McElroy.

Big picture view

The firm's executives point to President Donald Trump’s 25% tax on cars coming into the country as one factor driving their decision to act immediately. However, they acknowledge that many uncertainties remain.

Local perspective

Dr. Michael Greiner from Oakland University, along with other economic experts, believes that certain signs suggest a potential downturn could be approaching. There is an observed decline in consumer confidence coupled with significant fluctuations in the stock market and over a 10 percent decrease in the value of the S&P 500.
